Additional information

Arising from a multidisciplinary industrial research contract held jointly by Faculty of Biological Sciences and School of Mechanical Engineering (CKlotz2@DPYUS.JNJ.com). Published with an international clinical co-author (Wirth) and international industry co-authors (Klotz, McNulty DePuy Synthes USA). Nanometre-sized wear particles contribute to the failure mechanism of implants and in this study were identified in shoulder simulator lubricants for the first time. The paper had a major surgical influence and international reach. This research has led to further industrial research contracts with DePuy to isolate particulates from new polymer bearing materials from simulator lubricants (Anti-oxidant polyethylene, polyether ether ketone (PEEK)).
