Additional information

This paper builds from the fundamental understanding of the wear mechanism in UHMWPE artificial joints and presents a new paradigm shift using contact area rather than load in computational wear modelling for the first time. This extends the capacity of computational wear modelling and provides a complimentary tool to pre-clinical experimental testing of artificial hip joints. Research was carried out through EPSRC GR/T01013/01 and Portfolio grant GR/S63892/01 and subsequently applied in collaboration with DePuy through EPSRC/TSB IKC in regenerative therapies and devices EP/G032483/1 to support a global project in design and development of new hip prostheses (industry contact Isaac, gisaac@its.jnj.com).
