Additional information

Lent’s videos, made between 2007 and 2008, were selected for a film and video showcase co-produced by the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and the Squeaky Wheel media centre in New York. The event included classic, new experimental, and avant-garde shorts by international artists. Lent was invited to exhibit two silent video works, OklahomaisOK and number2. OklahomaisOK was constructed of multiple layers of video footage of the flat Oklahoma countryside with a series of wind turbines. Through layering and repetition the piece sought to examine the experience and perception of journey. Similarly, number2 examined an experience of place and consisted of overlaid video gathered at a site known as the Devil’s Punch Bowl in Northern California. Footage of the churning coastal waters were subjected to various processes including re-scaling, hue, and intercutting in order to draw the viewer’s perception to the experience of place. The videos reflect on the construction of the works themselves, and the difficulty of representing experience. At a special event the videos were scored live by musician Don Metz. The videos were an initial stage of what would later become a major focus of Lent’s research into the durational and the mobile experience of landscape. Further, as a result of the collaboration with Metz, audio became a much more important component of his video work and he later edited his videos using the soundtrack as a guide. OklahomaisOK and number2 have since been exhibited at international venues, and the work that they informed has been critical to Lent’s visual and textual research production.
