Additional information

That Chartist candidates contested parliamentary polls in 1841 and 1847 was covered at a necessarily superficial level in the author's syncretic history (Chartism: A New History) published in 2007. This article, however, offers a pioneering analytical account of Chartist electioneering across the whole period 1839-60, backed by an annotated listing of all such electoral contests. This supports an original argument of significance not only for its own immediate subject but also for understanding the Chartist legacy for later political developments.
