Double-weighted statement

The conceptual premise behind American Patriotism, America Protest was highly ambitious. It involved the excavation and exploration of both the legacy of 1960s-style activism, and the rhetorical, symbolic, and ideological deployment of ‘Americanism’ and other forms of patriotism, across five social movements, from across the political spectrum, during the final three decades of the twentieth century. Establishing command of the existing, extensive, scholarship was a particular challenge. Substantial archival research, involving major collections at the LSE, Wisconsin Historical Society, Brown University, and the University of Kansas, provided the necessary empirical underpinning. The project took five years to complete.
