A novel process for enhancing oil production in algae biorefineries through bioconversion of solid by-products
If algae based biofuel production is to become a reality, it is essential that processes are designed and operated with a minimum of waste production. This paper is significant because it establishes for the first time, at semi-industrial scale, the processing of solid residues from an algae oil process. The paper demonstrates the potential for the production of microbial oils from the carbohydrate fraction of the waste solids. The work has already started to attract attention in bioprospecting studies (e.g. in Argentina, lcuratti@fiba.org.ar) and has provided a basis for industrial consideration of algae biofuels.
