Additional information

An alternative ligand for the separation of minor actinides from lanthanides was studied for its speciation with numerous metal cations and their thermodynamic stabilities which, in this paper, indicated the 1,2,4-triazin-3-yl molecular component is essential for the successful separation of minor actinides from lanthanides by solvent extraction. This is significant because successful minor actinide/lanthanide partitioning in conjunction with transmutation could reduce the necessary lifetime of nuclear waste repositories from over 100000 years to as low as 300 years.
