A novel method to detect Heart Beat Rate using a mobile phone
This EPSRC supported research developed a system that would use a mobile phone camera to recognise and record the heartbeat without the use of any extra hardware. The user is only required to place his/her finger onto the camera lens. The system would rely on small luminance fluctuations, directly related to heartbeat rate. This research was developed in Android, Symbian and Windows Mobile, in collaboration with an industrial partner. The result was patented in 2009 and, since then, several applications for Android and iPhone were created based on this algorithm.
