Additional information

There is little empirical work on the contradiction between a legal requirement that “drivers” should continue to pay attention under high automation and their motivation to engage in activities such as infotainment. This paper, which emanates from the EU Easy project (RG.TRAN.471643), finds that with high automation “drivers” will divert their attention. This finding, which may inform design guidance for managing the transfer of control back to manual driving, is being explored further in the context of the new EU AdaptIVe project led by VW (contact: Aria Etemad).
