Could Intelligent Speed Adaptation make overtaking unsafe?
Limiting driver speed at source, via engine management, is technically feasible and demonstrates sizeable safety benefits. Drivers’ interactions with technology are not always predictable however, and this study addresses one of the most-cited (anecdotal) disadvantages of this safety system: that of “not being able to accelerate out of danger”. This paper describes a driving simulator study, carried out as part of the DfT ‘Intelligent Speed Adaptation’ project (RG.TRAN.445893, contact: Catherine Parton), which highlighted the need for drivers to become familiarised with the workings of the technology in a wide range of driving scenarios, and to adapt their behaviour accordingly.
