Performance analysis of a novel Q-limit guided continuation power flow method
Voltage collapse in power networks is a very significant issue, accounting for about half of all power black-outs internationally. Continuation power flow methods have been introduced to track the evolution of the power system state as network loads approach the stability boundary. This paper introduces an improved algorithm for this analysis, taking into account the limited reactive power capabilities of generators (i.e. their Q-limits) and giving a faster solution to this computationally demanding problem. The algorithm has been cited by various researchers and has potential for future application in transmission companies which experience or anticipate voltage stability issues.
