This book is a thoroughly reworked and extended study based on Kropp’s doctoral dissertation (148,000 words, 500 pages). The study covers a great range of data (architecture, coins, sculpture etc.), much of which was neglected or published inadequately in the past. Beside library research, many of the most important observations are based on time-consuming autopsies on site and in museums. Tracing the development of Nabataean portraiture on the coins of Petra, for example, required study of several hundreds of specimens in museum collections and on the market (many of them unpublished).
