Vital Signs: Essential AIDS Fiction
Anthology of American shorter fiction concerning AIDS, both in terms of personal narratives (the experience of the syndrome) and in historical, geographical, social, cultural and political terms (the extending reach of the consequent epidemic). A critical and contextualising ‘Introduction’ of 12000 words recounts the story of HIV/AIDS in American fiction more widely, deploying the selected material in a range of illustrative contexts, whilst also alluding to longer works of fiction and non-fiction, as well as examples of “AIDS culture” in other creative genres. Critical and academic responses to these works, and theoretical models for “AIDS cultures” also feature prominently.
