All-optical phase and amplitude regenerator for next-generation telecommunications systems
Significance of output:
Reports the first optical regenerator operating directly on the optical field and that needs only the noisy signal-to-be-regenerated at its input. Required top research labs (e.g., A.Ellis, Tyndall, Ireland; P.Andrekson, Chalmers, Sweden) and companies (e.g,, G.Schinn, EXFO, Sweeden/Canada, L.Gruner-Nielsen, Furukawa, Denmark) supported by EU project PHASORS (www.eu-phasors.eu, £3M) led by ORC to contribute in many disruptive technologies (e.g., new nonlinear fibres, narrow linewidth lasers). Established us as world leaders in this field, and helped to secure further funds (e.g., EPSRC Programme Grant “Hyperhighway” (EP/I01196X/1, £7.2M, 2010-2016)). Generated public (www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-11229085) and industrial interest (M.O'Sullivan mosulliv@ciena.com, Ciena Canada; S.Farwell, Selina.Farwell@Oclaro.com, Oclaro, UK).
