<09>Despite the title, this paper is much more than a review as it introduces and demonstrates, the concept of contextual awareness in globally-distributed software development. Contextual awareness cuts across more established forms of awareness and arises because software developers form different perceptions of their colleagues work, roles, and relationships depending upon the particular 'context' that they are working in. This contribution has led to researchers explicitly considering contextual awareness in new collaborative tool developments e.g. Sarama's TSE 2012 paper on Palantir, Talaei-Khoei et al's policy awareness framework and in Romano's collaborative support for bioinformatics research.
