Additional information

This paper confirmed at the single cell level for the first time functional properties of lens fibre cells, which had previously only been possible only in intact tissue. This paper provided the first evidence for differentiation-dependent alterations in spatially-correlated ion fluxes across the ocular lens, providing an entirely new framework for interpreting the physiological function of this important tissue, which is itself an optical component and lacks a blood supply.
