Additional information

This work was the first stage in processing lignin into aromatics. Lignin is important as the only naturally derived aromatic substance as a precursor to biofuels and aromatic chemicals. This research showed that fast pyrolysis of a standard bioethanol derived lignin produced a useful mixed phenolics product suitable for refinement to aromatics. Subsequent research (catalytic processing) is sponsored by USA based company, Virdia Inc (Noa Lapidot 2014). Fractionated biomass is a key thrust at Aston to derive higher value products such as chemicals and fuel additives as part of SUPERGEN Bioenergy Challenge Project, (EPSRC EP/K036548/1, £1,475k; 2013–2017)
