Additional information

This paper results from funded research at an IMRC centre set up by EPSRC. The scope of the work is the minimisation of defective machining in micro-milling. The work suggests a novel approach in setting up the manufacturing process. In this case, the relative position of the tool and workpiece is given using the tool as a probing tool, avoiding this artificial imaginary datum. The accuracy increased, reducing the scrap by around 60%. Interest in the work has been shown by the German company KERN producing micro-milling machines (Contact: Arthur Turner, Reinford Precission Ltd, rep for KERN Germany, sales@rainfordprecision.com).
