English abstract

This article outlines the legal framework for orphan care in Chosŏn Korea (1392-1910) and discusses changes in state policies and provisions. Special attention is given to late eighteenth-century reforms following which the state played a more active role in looking after such children. The context for the discussion is the Confucian statecraft reforms of the eighteenth century and the aim of the article is to contribute to the recent revaluation of Confucian statecraft in East Asian history. At the end of the article some statistical information is introduced to also discuss the social aspects of adoption in traditional Korea.
