Additional information

<20> Collaborative with an Aberdeen team, this paper forms one of the outputs of the “How was School Today” project (EPSRC EP/F067151/1, £102k). It provides a first time description of using data-to-text technology in a voice output communication system. Deployed in three special needs schools, sensor data collected in school are used to generate narratives for nonspeaking children. This proof-of-concept project led to two Digital Economy Research in the Wild projects (EP/H022376/1, £157k; EP/I031901/1, £150k). It appeared on national BBC TV news (5/6/2009) (top BBC website feature), winning the TES 2008 School Award for ‘Outstanding ICT Learning Initiative of the Year’.
