Additional information

This reports the first use of the wavelet packet transform for pulse-shape discrimination of neutrons and gamma rays in scintillation detectors termed simplified, digital charge comparison. This is important given 3He shortages in nuclear safety & security. The technique has attracted use and interest from the US Naval Research Laboratory (United States), the IAEA (Austria), the National University of Defense Technology (China), the Chinese Academy of Engineering Physics (Chengdu) and CSIRO (Australia) and returns the best measured separation. The research was funded by the UK MoD and the EPSRC, and used the neutron metrology facilities at National Physical Laboratory, UK.
