Magnetic response of split ring resonators (SRRs) at visible frequencies
This paper describes the first observation of magnetic resonance in the visible from a metamaterial formed by an array of split ring resonators, or nano-antennae. This results from a combination of small structures, the use of a silica substrate and, crucially, aluminium rather than gold. Aluminium has a higher bulk plasma frequency thus allowing us to bypass the predicted saturation frequency of gold. Applications include flat lenses. The paper has been cited by S Maier at Imperial College in ACS Nano and led to several invited talks including Metamaterials (Barcelona, 2011) and SPIE Photonics Europe (Brussels, 2012; http://spie.org/x86777.xml).
