Additional information

Absorption of solar radiation by the oceans is a major driver in global warming and climate change. Various extraordinary ideas have been proposed to prevent sunlight from reaching the water; irrespective of their practicality, these have received serious consideration. This paper introduces a novel method for covering areas of the ocean surface with bubbles to make them more reflective. Floating renewable wave energy farms would be located in tropical waters and used to drive devices that generate sheets of small bubbles. These would lie on the ocean's surface for some hours and eventually disperse, allowing responsive control over the reflectivity.
