Additional information

This ‘chapter’ is an introduction written for Avery’s single volume edition of Mary Coleridge’s poetry; the first to be published since Teresa Whistler’s 1954 edition. The new edition reprints 90 of Coleridge’s poems, taken in all cases from sources of first publication (either volumes or journal issues), along with a 13-page appendix of explanatory notes. The 22-page introductory essay (7,400 words) offers a reading of Coleridge’s work which, in line with Avery’s editorial decisions in compiling the collection, examines a much wider range of poems than is normally given attention in order to place a new focus upon Coleridge’s engagement with political radicalism.
