This paper presents a novel technique to understand the capture mechanism and mercury species present in fly ashes in order to improve their mercury retention and potential leaching. This paper is the output of the ABETRAP European project (Research Fund for Coal and Steel; RFCR-CT-2006-00006) that resulted in funding other European project (MERCURYCAP, RFCR-CT-2007-00007). This work contributed to Maroto-Valer award of the 2011 Royal Society of Chemistry Environment, Sustainability and Energy Division Early Career Award.
