This paper results from an EPSRC First Grant (Ref EP/F02956X/1, £374,952, 2008-2011) held by S. Boscolo. Direct results of this research were presented in 3 more journal papers, and various conference papers including invited talks at the European Conference on Optical Communication, the International Laser Physics Workshop, the International Conference on Photonics in Switching and the International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks. This and relating research on nonlinear fibre-based optical technology led to the award of a Leverhulme Trust Research Project Grant (Ref RPG-278, £221,415, 2012-15) to S. Boscolo.
