English abstract

This chapter focuses on the renowned dramatist Wil Sam Jones, but traces his little-known radio, film and television work. It argues that Jones’ career developed in parallel with significant media developments in the Welsh language between the 1950s -2000s, and that he was central to many ground-breaking ventures, such as scripting the first film shot on 35mm. A central theme to his work is recognized, that of brogarwch, the relationship between man and his community, which, it is argued, echoes the work J.R. Jones and D.J. Williams on the ‘local’ being a metaphor for the ‘national’.
