Fatigue and Performance in Bridge and Engine Control Room Watchkeeping on a 6on / 6off Watch Regime”
This paper presents the preliminary results from the EU Project HORIZON, which studied the fatigue and performance levels of 40 watch keepers in simulators in a continuous experiment for 7 days. It also describes the results of an innovative method of using video recordings of bridge and engine room activity to show how the location and mobility of watch keepers in these spaces changed during the experiment. As participants tired, they became less mobile in monitoring the system state and more time was spent sitting than standing. The analysis used graphical representations of the spaces to illustrate these changes.
