Significance of output:

The failure of mechanical joints is a threat to commercial operations and human safety in many engineering systems, not least piping systems used in the energy industry, e.g. Pipeline and Gas Journal, Sep 2010, 237(9), www.pipelineandgasjournal.com/identifying-pipe-joints-low-mechanical-properties. The wave-based method presented in this paper provides a new approach to quantifying the mechanical flexibility of a single joint, and hence its integrity, in built-up systems. The approach is inherently more robust than current modal methods which necessarily consider all joints in the system simultaneously. Our method has been developed further by other researchers to include a more sophisticated joint model (http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jsv.2012.09.026)
