Significance of output:

40 million people in the world are blind; this is expected to double by 2050. Our research provides unique insight into how most blind people can enhance their spatial navigation and independence by learning echolocation. It was part of a multidisciplinary, multicentre RCUK-funded project. Its international impact has been recognised by Nature World News (20/03/13), Daily Telegraph (front page, 21/05/13), Daily Mail (21/05/13), Hindustan Times (22/05/13), Deccan Herald (22/05/13), Voice Of America (21/05/13), BBC World Service (06/06/13), BBC News Health (07/06/13), Meridian ITV (filmed; showing this week), Canada/US Discovery Channel (filmed; showing Autumn 2013) and several others.
