Significance of output:

The UK composite boatbuilding industry is 3rd in the world for international reknown but lacks the computational resources to readily embrace technological improvements in design and production methods to outperform its US and Italian competitors. This paper shows that balancing cost, weight and durability for complex structural composite solutions can be achieved at little computational expense, making the impact of riskier design & production choices easier to explore at the earliest of design stages for little investment in time and money. This research has also been employed by the MoD for rapid structural assessment (Head Naval Architect, Catriona Savage:csavage@bmtdsl.co.uk).
