Significance of output:

This paper describes multidisciplinary work at Southampton into the novel use of aerostats or tethered lighter than air balloons to provide power. This concept bridges the gap between the efficient, extremely expensive method of using satellites to provide power and the inefficient generation of power on the ground using solar arrays. The paper calculates the potential power that could be provided and the characteristics of the aerostat required. The proposal to develop this work has generated industrial support from Cameron Balloons.
