Group velocity of elastic waves as eigensensitivity of a parameter dependent eigenvalue problem
Significance of output:
A wave approach is suitable for a range of practical engineering structures that have one length scale much greater than the remaining two (e.g. rails, beams, stiffeners) or two lengths much greater than the third (e.g. plates). Numerical calculations are often required to compute the wave speed. This work eliminates the need for one significant part of calculations, thus rendering the computations faster and the results easier to interpret. General eigensensitivity analysis proposed here has led to applications in completely new contexts (automotive: 4M+ Euro FP grant PIPER, contact: Dr. Phillipe Beillas philippe.beillas@ifsttar.fr; stochastic biomechanics:EPSRC grant EP/K034847/1).
