Significance of output:

This paper presents the development of a novel approach for tackling constrained optimisation as a multi-objective problem. The work is funded by Airbus and the paper presents a rigorous comparison with other methods via a wing design problem developed in conjunction with Airbus (contact: careen.holden@airbus.com). Treating constraints in this novel way leads to more accurate solutions, which in turn can result in more efficient wing designs, i.e. reduced weight and drag leading to better fuel efficiency.
