The book is based on over a decade of long-term and intermittent ethnographic fieldwork in the agricultural village of San Nicolás Tolentino, on the southern Pacific Coast of Guerrero, Mexico, and in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, US, where immigrants from San Nicolás settle. It also required archival research at the Archivo General de la Nación in Mexico City; the Archivo General del Estado de Guerrero in Chilpancingo, Guerrero, Mexico; Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, US; the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., US; and the Schomberg Center for Research on Black Culture in New York City, US.
