The 4-year project on which the book is based involved conducting over 70 interviews on individual life histories and with policymakers in Hungary, the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria and collating and evaluating policy documentation from sources in these locations that were often difficult to access. I conceived and planned the entire publication, wrote 5 out of 7 chapters (1, 2, 5, 6 and 7) and revised the remaining 2 chapters (3 and 4) drafted by Jenny Carl. Total text length is ca 95,000 words plus substantial appendices.
