Author contribution:

This article reports findings from a research project conducted by the authors within the major EU-funded LINEE project between 2008 and 2010. The original research idea and design were conceived by Jenkins building on her previous research into attitudes and identities in ELF (English as a Lingua Franca). The research was carried out and the data primarily analysed by Cogo, who also contributed her expertise in ELF pragmatics to the analysis. In co-writing the subsequent EJLP article, to which each author contributed 50%, each applied her distinctive ELF expertise in exploring issues relating to English language policy in Europe.
