Double-weighted statement

Female Gothic Histories offers a particularly extensive and complex theorisation of the development of Gothic historical fictions through a period of around two and a half centuries. This long timespan - from the late eighteenth century to the twenty-first century – was necessary to trace the evolution of both the Gothic and the historical novel and show how intimately they are connected, especially for women writers. In addition, the project brings together both psychoanalytic and historically-informed theories of the Gothic and the historical novel to argue that Gothic historical fictions are themselves a kind of metahistory.
