Additional information

The paper presents a novel synthesis (patent WO 2011/144919A1) of research undertaken at Edinburgh (3D model characterisation) and Cambridge (white light scanning). An application was demonstrated whereby a manufactured part, arbitrarily presented to a standard laptop camera from multiple angles, is automatically identified within a few seconds so that all associated information (e.g. part number and supplier) for the part can be retrieved from an intranet or the WWW. The algorithm presented is being used by ShapeSpace Ltd (Chris Ball, email available) and the software is being further developed in industry for parts-scanning application.
