Additional information

This paper reports two decades research culminating in the use of smouldering combustion for contaminated soil remediation, with patent (WO2007/066125A3) licensed worldwide with adoption in Europe, USA and Australia (David Major, DMajor@Geosyntec.com). The paper received the Combustion Engineering Association’s 2009 Lord Ezra Award (www.cea.org.uk). It has influenced flammability assessment for aircraft, trains and spacecraft and is now used by NASA (David Urban) and the European Space Agency (Olivier.Minster@esa.int) with underpinning future tests on an Advanced Transfer Vehicle by an international consortium led by Edinburgh (http://www.spacefiresafety.byg.dtu.dk/Projects.aspx, $12M, gary.a.ruff@nasa.gov). This work has impacted research in forest fires, carbon emissions and sequestration (www.fireparadox.org).
