Numerical simulation of the onset of slug initiation in laminar horizontal channel flow
The work demonstrated that direct numerical simulation could be used to predict the development of slugs in oil-gas pipelines and highlighted the importance of interfacial shear stress in this phenomenon. This is a key output from a collaboration with Imperial, Nottingham, Cranfield and 18 companies, including BP Exploration, Chevron and co-funded by EPSRC (EP/GR/S17765). The work underpinned wave growth analysis as a tool to validate 1D multiphase flow codes such as EMAPS (http://ufdc.ufl.edu/UF00102023/00443 and DoI:10.1063/1.4756636).The work has stimulated research to better understand flow regime transitions in the oil-gas industry (Switzerland, DoI:10.1504/PCFD.2012.047458).
