Additional information

This communication (restricted to “reports of unusual urgency, timeliness, significance” and four pages) is the first systematic study proving structural changes in ZIF-8 upon gas adsorption, which increases the size range for molecular sieving. This has since been identified as a fundamental effect observed also in other metal-organic frameworks: in USA, DoI:10.1021/ja305754f; and DoI:10.1039/C2CC38512K, and is critical for potential membrane applications (DoI:10.1021/ie202038m). The work is being taken up by others in: China, DoI:10.1021/ja401129h; USA, DoI:10.1021/jz300855a; and contributed to Düren receiving an invitation to prepare a review paper (DoI:10.1039/b803498m) and become co-chair of MOF2012, the main conference in the field.
