Optimal configurations of wave energy device arrays
A novel hydrodynamic optimisation method for farm-scale arrays of wave energy converters was presented and then compared with genetic algorithm techniques. This improves the spatial layout of farms of wave energy converters, leading to a prospective increase in energy capture. The commercial value of these techniques is evidenced by the £8M ETI project PerAWaT (www.eti.co.uk/technology_programmes/marine) and their adoption by GL Garrad-Hassan (Joao Cruz) in the WaveDyn software product. This paper also led directly to a Lloyds Register (Peter Davies, New York), funded PhD and has stimulated further research at Oxford (DoI:10.1016/j.oceaneng.2012.03.017).
