Additional information

The traditional technique of increasing the gain of a smart antenna is to use more antennas and RF front ends, increasing size and cost. This paper proposes a novel technique using a reconfigurable small director array (SDA) for increasing the gain of smart antennas while keeping a low profile, low mass, low power and low cost. Prototypes are developed and the concept is validated. It is applicable for small satellites, Unmanned-Aerial-Vehicles and mobile terminals. This ouput is an outcome from a collaborative project with NPL, UK. One US patent has been filed (Application No. PCT/GB2011/051826, filed on 27/09/2011).
