Additional information

A significant theoretical contribution to the design of output feedback sliding mode controllers showing, for the first time, the benefits of delay as a design parameter. The contribution enabled classes of previously unstabilisable systems to be stabilised using measured output information alone. The work was an international collaborative effort with the GIPSA-Lab, Grenoble and Tel-Aviv University. It is published as a full paper in the highly respected IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control. Spurgeon was subsequently invited to join the CNRS-funded international network on Delay Systems as UK node with others from Italy, Germany, Sweden, Belgium, Israel and the US.
