Additional information

This paper reported Kent’s unique contribution to identifying and resolving the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) issue in the phase reference distribution of the international Atacama Large Millimetre Array (ALMA) project (PPA/G/S/2000/00021, PP/B50014X/1)). This strategic contribution produced additional funding from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (USA) (NRAO-RFP-GB469). The work led to patent filings on minimising PMD in fibre stretchers (PCT/GB2007/002264) and (with NRAO) antenna cable wraps (8127.006.US), an invited tutorial at the IEEE Microwave Photonics Topical Meeting, Singapore, 2011, and citation in the invited tutorial of Professor Seeds (UCL) at the IEEE Photonics Society Annual Meeting, Arlington, 2011.
