The invitation to contribute to this 100% oversubscribed special issue, jointly published by two IEEE societies, resulted from international recognition of Gomes’s research contributions in ultra-low-cost radio over fibre (RoF) systems. The fully peer-reviewed paper summarised key achievements published in several IEEE journal papers, validating experimentally full wireless network operation using vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser links and analyses of protocol effects, while also indicating for the first time that spurious emissions may be the most significant limitation in multi-system implementations. The research resulted in an EU project supporting SMEs to develop RoF products for in-building television signal distribution (FP7-SME-2008-1-230881).
