10.7 Gb/s transmission over 1200 km of standard single-mode fiber by electronic predistortion using FPGA-based real-time digital signal processing
This first demonstration of real time 10 Gb/s digital signal processing on field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) led to major consultancy (>£500k) with Huawei, the world’s largest telecom company and with Xtera Communications (Stuart Barnes). Led to invitation to Technical Program Committee of Field Programmable Logic, (largest international conference on FPGA technology, www.fpl2013.org) and ECOC’2009 invited paper (most significant European conference in the field). Led to collaboration with Intel Research and Carnegie Mellon University on high speed optical OFDM (£136k funding from Intel) and Brunel Fellowship award to Dr Philip Watts from Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 (www.royalcommission1851.org.uk/recent.html).
