Additional information

This paper presents a new modelling procedure which, for the first time, allows reinforced concrete (RC) to be modelled with realistic damage and performance at high scaling factors (e.g. up to 1:100) for centrifuge modelling of soil-structure interaction. Before this, model concretes were limited to < 1:20 scale. This work has subsequently led to international collaborations with National Technical University of Athens (2012) on new foundation types for protecting sensitive RC bridge structures and with University of Auckland (2013, ongoing) on seismic behaviour of low rise structures, funded by the New Zealand Natural Hazards Research Platform (total value 342,353 NZD).
