Additional information

The paper resulted from an EPSRC grant (GR/R74703/01) under its Physics-Engineering Programme. It reports the results of a collaborative modelling study with the Ohio State University that demonstrated, for the first time, (i) the generation of density micro-structure within an initially linearly-stratified fluid, as a result of double diffusive instability associated with the destabilising action of viscosity, (ii) quantitative experimental verification of the stability characteristics of the flow predicted by a mathematical analysis in the large Schmidt number asymptotic limit.
